The aim – to comprehensive sociological study of the socio-psychological factors in the formation of a shortage of medical personnel in in-demand medical specialties in the educational environment of a regional medi- cal university. The problem of staffing regional healthcare initiates research interest in the problematic field of public health, organization and sociology of healthcare. The article presents the results of a sociological study of the choice of a doctor’s professional trajectory in the educational environment of the Volgograd Medical University. Materials and methods. Qualitative and quantitative sociological methods were used: 4 focus groups were conducted, 8 in- depth interviews and a sociological online survey using a continuous sampling method for model groups of students and residents. 2,744 questionnaires were processed. Results. Students’ choice of a medical specialty is determined by a number of socio-psychological factors, among which the priority of personal interest is noted (noted by 78.6 % of students) rather than high pay (noted by 40.2 % of students). At the same time, 58.2 % of junior students and 17.7 % of senior students do not demonstrate clear plans for a professional career, experience frustr ation with their choice and need psychological and social support. Scientific contribution. A rating of support and incentive measures for working in rural areas and choosing educational programs in scarce specialties was determined. Conclusion. The results obtained indicate the possibility of vocational guidance work in an educational environ- ment – psychological and pedagogical support with management of the choice of professional trajectory. Area of application. The research materials will allow us to develop scientifically based approaches to forming students’ motivation to choose scarce medical specialties.
