POSSIBILITY TO USE STANDARD METHODS FOR ASSESSING IDEAL BODY WEIGHT IN STUDENT-ATHLETES

Резюме

The article discusses various popular and widely used approaches to the calculation of ideal body weight (IBW) in the field of physi¬cal culture and spot. Purpose: to evaluate the possibility of using various calculation methods to determine the IBW of student-athletes of vari¬ous sports. Materials and methods. We examined 65 student-athletes involved in martial arts, game and cyclic sports aged 19 to 25 years. An anthropometric study was carried out, IBW values were calculated using 12 formulas, and the component composition of the body was de¬termined. From most of the formulas for calculating the IBW, which are variations in the ratio of length and body weight, the Borngardt formula was distinguished, which takes into account not only the height, but also the value of the chest girth at rest and had noticeable correlations with other indices (from r = 0.53 to r = 0.62 at p < 0.0001). Results. In the study sample, with an increase in body length, there was no proportional increase in transverse dimensions. Thus, the body length moderately correlates with the width of the shoulders (r = 0.42 at p < 0.001), and there was no correlation with the width of the pelvis. The discrepancy between the IBW and the actual weight indicated that the «ideal» param¬eters are essentially far from the real mass of active athletes. Conclusion. The use of standard indices for the calculation of IBW in the practice of sports leads to questionable results. A correct assessment of the IBW by standard approaches is possible only in the «optimal» ranges of body length, which makes their use an unsuitable tool in many cases of sports practice.
